The following rules are subject to change in accordance with the Ohio State Fair Dog Show rule changes.

***For 2007, there are no Qualifying Shows or Judging Evaluations necessary to show at the State level. All 2007 Ohio State Fair Junior Fair Dog Show classes are open to all youth. ***
1. Any youth may enter the State Fair Dog Show class(es) he/she and his/her dog(s) are eligible for by completing an entry form, which must be postmarked by July 13 and mailed directly to the State Fair Entry Department.
2. The Jr. Fair participant, parent, 4-H advisor, and Extension Educator must sign the entry form verifying that the Jr. Fair participant is enrolled in the eligible dog project.
3. Any dog exhibiting unsafe or threatening behavior at any time on the State Fairgrounds will be removed from the Fairgrounds.
Rules and Regulations
1. Dogs must be registered with the Extension Office by June 22, 2007, 4:30 PM.
2. Dogs participating in the Hamilton County Jr. Fair Dog Show and Ohio State Fair Jr. Fair Dog Show must be owned by the Jr. Fair participant or the participant's immediate family.
3. The dog(s) must be in the continual care of the Jr. Fair participant for the duration of the project.
a. Continual care is defined as the Jr. Fair participant being responsible for and involved in the feeding, cleaning, and caring of the dog.
b. Hardship cases will not be considered for county or state fair competition.
4. Jr. Fair participants are required to complete the specified requirements in order to complete the project.
5. It is required that Jr. Fair participants participate in 50% of the training sessions offered from the time the participant joins the dog project, which is April 1, 2007, to the first show.
a. Training sessions are considered the training sessions held during club meetings only - where both participant and dog are present.
6. All exhibitors must have a certificate of vaccination and a license available for examination when registering their dog at the County Fair.
7. All dogs participating in the Hamilton County Fair shall be immunized against distemper, adenovirus (hepatitis), leptospirosis, parainfluenza, parvovirus, and rabies by a licensed, accredited veterinarian.
8. Dogs must also be currently licensed in their county of residence.
9. All required vaccinations for dogs exhibited in Dog Care classes must be given after August 8, 2006 and before July 24, 2007 by a licensed, accredited veterinarian.
10. All required vaccinations for dogs exhibited in other classes must be given after August 15, 2006 and before July 29, 2007.
11. Veterinarians must note any deviations from the required vaccinations (i.e. leptospirosis vaccination not given by veterinarian or dog’s titer tested in lieu of vaccinations) either on the ODA Official Health Certificate or Certificate of Vaccination for the 2007 Ohio State Fair Junior Dog Show or on veterinarian’s letterhead that accompanies the official health papers.
12. Females in season are not permitted on the Fairgrounds. However, the exhibitor is expected to attend the County Jr. Fair Dog Show.
13. Exhibitors must provide their own leash, water dish, kennel, and any equipment needed.
14. Dogs must be kept on leash while on the Fairgrounds, except when participating in the ring during judging.
15. Exhibitors are fully responsible for their dogs while on the Fairgrounds.
16. Exhibitors are expected to clean up after their dogs.
17. The judge may dismiss from the ring any dog exhibiting unsafe or threatening behavior or any exhibitor abusing their dog (verbally and/or physically).
18. The Jr. Fair professionals and show officials in charge will also have the right and responsibility to order the removal from the grounds any person abusive to show personnel.
19. Only the Jr. Fair dog, Jr. Fair exhibitor, and show officials will be permitted in the ring while any class is being judged.
20. Using bait in Grooming and Handling is up to the discretion of the judge.
21. Food, treats, or toys are not permitted on the show floor during obedience classes.
22. Dogs must be clean and brushed, free from matted hair, fleas, ticks, and any internal and/or external diseases.
23. Purebred dogs do not have to be in regulation show clip.
SPECIFICATIONS
Obedience
1. Obedience collars include well-fitting plain buckle or slip collars of an appropriate single length of leather, fabric or chain with two rings, one on each end.
2. Fancy collars, or special training collars, or collars that are either too tight or so large that they hang down unreasonably in front of the dogs are not permitted.
3. Nothing shall be hanging from the collars.
4. Leashes may be of fabric or leather and should be 6 feet in length.
5. Chain leashes are not acceptable.
Grooming and Handling
1. Grooming and Handling collars include a chain or fabric slip collar, or martingale-type show lead.
2. Nothing shall be hanging from the collars.
3. Leashes may be of fabric or leather and long enough to allow for easy handling of the dog.
4. Chain leashes are not acceptable.
Dumbbells
1. Dumbbells must be made of one or more solid pieces of one of the heavy hardwoods, or of a rigid or semi-rigid, firm, nontoxic, non-wooded material, similar in size, shape, color, and weight to a wooden dumbbell.
2. Metal dumbbells are not permitted.
3. Dumbbells shall not be hollowed out.
4. They may be unfinished, or coated with a clear finish, or painted white.
5. They shall have not decorations or attachments, but may bear an inconspicuous mark for identification.
6. The size of the dumbbell shall be proportionate to the size of the dog.
Handler’s and dog’s appearance
1. Jr. Fair participants should be neat and clean in appearance.
2. They should not wear jeans, T-shirts, apparel with slogans, 4-H club or dog club names, etc., in the show ring.
3. It is important that clothing is comfortable and appropriate for dog shows.
a. Clothing should not limit or hinder the judge’s view of the dog.
4. For Grooming and Handling classes, the same uniform rules apply.
SHOWS
1. Exhibitors showing their dogs at any Licensed or Participant Obedience Trial or at a Sanctioned Match must show their dogs on or after the project enrollment deadline at the same or higher level than they are showing in AKC, UKC, or other titling shows.
2. Fun matches do not apply.
3. Dogs who have completed their Companion Dog (C.D.) title (or UKC, or other titling equivalents) prior to enrollment deadline, must show in Graduate Novice classes.
4. Dogs who have completed their Companion Dog Excellent (C.D.X.) title (or UKC, or other titling equivalents) prior to enrollment deadline, must show in Open B or Graduate Open A/B classes.
CLASSES
Sub-Novice A
1. This class is for the beginning exhibitor and beginning dog.
a. Neither handler nor dog with prior show experience or previously entered in this class.
2. All exercises will be performed on leash.
3. Exercises to be performed include:
a. Heel
b. figure 8
c. stand on examination
d. recall
e. long sit (1 minute)
f. long down (3 minutes)
4. Once an exhibitor shows in this class, he/she must move to Sub-Novice B at the very minimum.
5. Once a dog has been shown in this class, the dog must be shown at the Sub-Novice B level at the very minimum.
Sub-Novice B
1. Handler or dog has previously entered in this class or has prior show experience at Sub-Novice level; have not yet progressed to Novice level.
a. Exhibitor can show in this class one year only with the same dog.
2. All exercises performed on leash.
3. Exercises performed are same as those performed in Sub Novice A.
4. Exhibitors can show in Sub-Novice B one year only at the county fair with the same dog. Then they must move to Novice A with that same dog.
5. Once a dog has been shown in this class, the dog must be shown at the Novice A level at the very minimum.
Novice A
1. Neither handler nor dog previously entered in this class.
2. Exercises to be performed include:
a. heel on leash
b. figure 8 on leash
c. stand on examination off leash
d. heel free
e. recall off leash
f. long sit (one minute off leash)
g. long down (3 minutes off leash).
3. Once a dog has been shown in this class, the dog must be shown at the Novice B level at the very minimum.
Novice B
1. Handler or dog has previously entered in this class or has prior show experience at Novice level; have not yet progressed to Graduate Novice A level
a. Jr. Fair participant can show in this class one year only with the same dog.
2. Exercises to be performed are same as those performed in Novice A.
3. Exhibitors can show in Novice B one year only at the county fair with the same dog. They then must move to Graduate Novice A with that same dog.
4. Once a dog has been shown in this class, the dog must be shown at the Graduate Novice A level at the very minimum.
Graduate Novice A
1. Neither handler nor dog has previously entered in this class or handler and dog has one year prior show experience in this class
a. Exhibitor can show in this class a maximum of two years with same dog
b. Exhibitor is eligible to repeat this class with different dog
2. If first place is received in this class the first year, the exhibitor must move to Graduate Novice B level with same dog.
3. Exercises to be performed are:
a. heel on leash
b. stand for examination off leash
c. heel free and figure 8
d. drop on recall
e. long sit (3 minutes off leash and handler out of sight)
f. long down (5 minutes off leash and handler out of sight)
Graduate Novice B
1. Handler or dog has previously entered in this class or has prior show experience at Graduate Novice A or B level, handler or dog has met the Graduate Novice A requirements but has not yet progressed to Open A level with the same dog.
2. Exercises to be performed include:
a. heel on leash
b. heel free and figure 8
c. drop on recall
d. retrieve on flat
e. long sit (3 minutes off leash with handler out of sight)
f. long down (5 minutes off leash and handler out of sight)
3. An exhibitor can show in this class a maximum of two years at the county fair with the same dog. He/she must then move to Open A with that same dog.
4. If an exhibitor wins the Graduate Novice B class the first year, he/she must move to Open A the next year with the same dog.
5. Once a dog has been shown in this class for two years, the dog must be shown at the Open A level.
6. The dog of a first place winner in the Graduate Novice B class must be shown at the Open A level.
Open A
1. Neither handler nor dog has previously entered in this class.
2. All exercises are performed off leash.
3. Exercises include:
a. heel free and figure 8
b. drop on recall
c. retrieve on flat
d. retrieve over high jump
e. broad jump
f. long sit (3 minutes off leash with handler out of sight)
g. long down (5 minutes off leash with handler out of sight)
4. Once a participant shows in this class, he/she must move to Open B at the very minimum.
5. Once a dog has been shown in this class, the dog must be shown at the Open B level at the very minimum.
Open B
1. Handler or dog has previously entered in this class or has prior show experience at Open level
2. All exercises performed will be same as those performed in Open A.
3. Exhibitor has also not progressed to the Graduate Open level or higher.
4. Exhibitors can show in Open B a maximum of two years at the county fair with the same dog. Then they must move to Graduate Open A with that same dog.
5. If an exhibitor wins the Open B class the first year, he/she must move to Graduate Open A the next year with the same dog.
6. Once a dog has been shown in this class for two years, the dog must be shown at the Graduate Open A level.
7. The dog of a first place winner in the Open B class must then be shown at the Graduate Open A level.
Junior Grooming and Handling A
1. Participant must be 9-11 years of age as of January 1 of current year.
a. Neither handler nor dog has prior show experience or previously entered in Grooming & Handling
Junior Grooming and Handling B
1. Participant must be between the ages of 9-11 as of January 1 of current year
b. Handler or dog has previously entered in this class or has prior show experience in Grooming and Handling
Intermediate Grooming and Handling A
1. Participant must be 12-14 years of age as of January 1 of current year.
c. Neither handler nor dog with prior show experience in Grooming and Handling.
Intermediate Grooming and Handling B
1. Participant must be 12-14 years of age as of January 1 of current year.
d. Handler or dog previously entered in this class or prior show experience in Grooming and Handling
Senior Grooming and Handling A
1. Participant must be between the ages of 15-18 as of January 1 of current year.
e. Neither handler nor dog with prior show experience in Senior Grooming and Handling.
Senior Grooming and Handling B
1. Participant must be between the ages of 15-18 as of January 1 of current year.
f. Handler or dog previously entered in this class or prior show experience in Grooming and Handling
Areas to be evaluated for the Grooming and Handling

1. This class is for Jr. Fair participants enrolled in Dog Guides for the Blind, Project No. 201 or a Self-Determined Service or Helper Dog Project; dogs are owned by Pilot Dogs or other Assistance Dog Organizations.
2. Exercises to be performed include:
a. Dog’s Appearance & Grooming
b. Accepting a Stranger
c. Walk on Loose Leash
d. Walk through Crowd
e. Sit for Exam
f. Reaction to Another Dog
g. Staying in Place
h. Reaction to Distraction.
Junior Dog Care
1. Participant must be between the ages of 9-11 as of January 1 of the current year and enrolled in Dog Care, Project No. 200.
2. Winner in this class may repeat this class every other year.
Intermediate Dog Care
1. Participant must be between the ages of 12-14 as of January 1 of the current year and enrolled in Dog Care, Project No. 200.
2. Winner in this class may repeat this class every other year.
Senior Dog Care
1. Participant must be between the ages of 15-18 as of January 1 of the current year and enrolled in Dog Care, Project No. 200.
2. Winner in this class may repeat this class every other year.
