Hamilton County Agricultural Society To Host “County Market”
Hamilton County Agricultural Society President Pat Ekardt announced today that the Society will host a County Market on Thursdays starting on Thursday, May 22. It will be held at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds, 7801 Anthony Wayne Ave., from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm weekly through October 30, 2008, except during Fair Week, July 31-August 4.
“For 189 years, the role of the Society has been to educate and promote agriculture and horticulture in Hamilton
County,” said Ekardt. “We are best known for holding the Fair, but with the explosion in home gardening and buying food from local producers, we felt the time was ripe for giving Hamilton Countians an opportunity both to buy and sell produce and products related to gardening.”
Unlike several Farmers’ Markets, the Society’s will offer more than just vegetables, eggs and honey. “Our County Market is open to professional growers and backyard gardeners alike,” states Dick Ingle, the manager of the fair grounds. “We also hope to attract vendors offering plants, original homemade crafts and artwork, baked goods, live and dried flowers, herbs, as well as products used to grow, process or store food products.
“In addition, as part of our Society’s job to promote and educate, we are in the process of scheduling “How To” clinics where visitors can see learn more about cultivating their plot of ground, different types of plants that grow well in the area, composting, safe ways of preserving food and insect and pest control,” he added.
Vendors have the choice of buying a season pass ($200) or paying weekly ($15) during the 23 week session. All vendors must apply in advance and list what they intend to sell. The market will be held on the southwest side of the fair grounds, just inside the Vine Street entrance. Admission and parking are free.
Interested vendors can view the Market rules and download an application from www.hcasmarket.com.
