JR. FAIR BEEF CATTLE JUDGING/POLICIES

In the event of death, the exhibitor must have a signed, original letter from a veterinarian. The exhibitor may replace the project if the steer/heifer dies before March 1st. S/he has one week (7 days) to purchase a replacement steer. Market steer/heifer project animals that die after March 1st cannot be replaced. If an animal dies, the Species Coordinator must be notified immediately.
Cattle - General Regulations
1. All market steer and market heifer project animals must be weighed and tagged at a location designated by the Jr. Fair Species Coordinator/Educator on the first Saturday after January 1st.
a. Tagging will take place from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
b. In case of inclement weather, weigh-in and tagging will take place the second Saturday following January 1st.
2. All market beef animals must be haltered and led to the scale by the exhibitor.
3. Market steer and market heifer projects must weigh a minimum of 900 pounds in order to be sold.
4. All steers and market heifers must be dehorned to be exhibited/sold.
5. Only 2006 calves may be secured for market steer and market heifer project animals for 2007.
6. Project market animals must be beef breed, not dairy crosses.
7. A total of four (4) market steers/heifers may be exhibited/sold by a Jr. Fair participant during the Jr. Fair calendar year (Oct. 1- Sept. 30).
8. Jr. Fair Participants that would like to exhibit market steers/heifers and feeder calves at the Harvest Home Fair must submit a request with their individual project enrollment by April 1, 2007.
9. Participants must have all market steers/heifers in hand and on dry feed by January 1.
10. Steers are not to be on nursing cows or pasture after January 1.
11. Feeder calf project animals must be born between September 1, 2006 and May 1, 2007 to be exhibited/sold in 2007.
12. Feeder calves must be owned and cared for by the Jr. Fair participant by June 1.
13. Feeder calves must be castrated/de-horned and healed by June 1, 2006.
14. A total of three (3) feeder calves may be exhibited/sold by a Jr. Fair participant during the Jr. Fair calendar year (Oct. 1- Sept. 30).
a. This total shall include the projects exhibited\sold at the Hamilton County Fair (2) and the Harvest Home Fair (1).
15. Feeder calves will be tagged by the Species Coordinator the first Saturday in June.
16. Feeder calves must be weaned by July 1 and halter broken in order to show/sell.
17. Feeder calves must weigh a minimum of 350 pounds in order to be sold.
a. If necessary, feeder calf classes will be divided by weight.
18. Feeder calves may be exhibited in showmanship classes by their owner.
19. Feeder calf project animals that die may not be replaced.
20. A feeder calf project animal may be shown at the Hamilton County Fair and Harvest Home Fair.
21. Beef Breeding females over 36 months of age must have produced a living calf within 12 months of exhibition or a veterinarian’s proof of pregnancy must accompany the animal’s health certificate.
22. All beef breeding project animals must be in the possession/care of the exhibitor on and after May 1.
23. All beef breeding project animals must have a form of identification for the barn registration.
24. Only animals shown in individual classes may be shown in group classes.
25. Beef must be cleaned before entering the barn on arrival day (Tuesday before fair).
26. Health papers must be given to the Species Coordinator by weigh-in time.

Exhibits will be graded on an A, B, and C basis, and placed on a 1, 2, and 3 basis.
Awards and/or Rosettes will be awarded to First, Second, and Third Place in each class.

Beef Breeding Classes
1. Junior Heifer Calf - born after January 1, 2007
2. Senior Heifer Calf - born between September 1, 2006 and December 31, 2006
3. Summer Yearling Heifer - born between May 1, 2006 and August 31, 2006
4. Junior Yearling Heifer - born between January 1, 2006 and April 30, 2006
5. Senior Yearling Heifer - born between August 1, 2005 and December 31, 2005
6. Beef Production - Female animal over two (2) years without calf; safe in calving only
7. Cow with Calf - calf at side born after January 1, 2007.
8. Junior Bull Calf - born after January 1, 2007. (Bull calf must be exhibited in Class 7)
9. Pair of Females -Animals must have been exhibited in classes 1-7
Jr. Fair Steer Rate-of-Gain Contest
To determine which exhibitor's steer had the highest daily average rate of gain, all Jr. Fair market steer exhibitors will compete in a rate-of-gain contest.

Open to all Jr. Fair beef exhibitors 14 yrs. old and older (as of January 1 of current year)
Junior Showmanship
Open to all Jr. Fair beef exhibitors under the age of 14 yrs. (as of January 1 of current year)
NOVICE SHOWMANSHIP
Open to all Jr. Fair participants age 8-18 showing a specie for the FIRST TIME EVER.
